I switched to a healthy diet, but why is my skin breaking out and my whole body aching?

  1. Plant toxins
  2. Oxalic acid
The phenomenon in which oxalic acid crystals that have been accumulated in the body for a long time are broken down and expelled from the body after switching to a low-oxalic acid diet is called 'Oxalate Clearing' or 'Oxalate Dumping'.
In this messy cleansing process that digs into the intestines to expel microscopic toxic waste from the body, our immune system recognizes oxalic acid as a dangerous substance, triggering powerful inflammatory storms, stimulating nerves and blood vessels, and consuming large amounts of electrolytes. As a result, highly varied and sometimes severe detoxification reactions may occur throughout the body along the elimination pathways.
We provide a comprehensive summary of the symptoms that may occur during oxalic acid excretion, categorized by body part and system.

1. Skin (most common drainage route)

The skin is one of the main pathways for oxalic acid to exit, and skin symptoms occur very frequently during the excretion phase.
Rash and itching: Severe itching, red or white bumps, blisters, boils, hives, etc. appear.
Skin peeling: The skin on the toes, feet, and fingertips peels or gets scraped.
Crystal and powder discharge: You may directly witness fine, sand-like white crystals on the skin around your fingernails or legs, or white, dust-like powder (cloud) being ejected when scratched.

2. Urinary system and urine

Since the kidneys are the primary outlet for oxalic acid, the state of the urine changes dramatically during the excretion period.
Crystalluria: Cloudy urine or fine, sand-like sediment is visible in the urine.
Urinary abnormalities and pain: Temporary symptoms similar to a urinary tract infection (UTI) occur, such as frequent urination, urgency (sudden and strong urge to urinate), bladder pain, and urethral burning.
Urine color and smell: Your urine may become darker than usual, or your urine or underarm sweat may emit a terrible stench like 'ammonia' for several days, even if you drink a lot of water.
Other: Both men and women complain of urinary tract discomfort; in men, white, sand-like particles may be found on the tip of the penis, and kidney stones may be expelled.

3. Digestive System and Feces

Oxalic acid is also released through the intestinal mucosa and causes upper abdominal tenderness or abdominal cramps mentioned in the previous conversation.
Changes in stool: Stool has a gritty or sandy texture and may contain unidentified stains or fragments.
Gastrointestinal disorders: Chronic diarrhea, constipation, indigestion, acid reflux, dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), gallbladder symptoms, intestinal cramps and stabbing abdominal pain, hemorrhoids, etc. occur.

4. Facial mucosa and respiratory system (eyes, nose, mouth, lungs)

Oxalic acid crystals also leak out through the tear glands, salivary glands, and respiratory mucosa.
Eyes: During a nap or rest, a liquid mixed with fine white sand may seep out of the eyes, or upon waking in the morning, the eyes may stick together and remain closed due to thick, coarse, sand-like eye discharge. The eyes may sting and turn red, and a stye may develop due to blocked tear ducts or an immune reaction.
Respiratory system and mucous membranes: Gritty snot may occur, or hoarseness and a sore throat may develop. When expelled through the lungs, a hard, white object shaped like a piece of nail clipping (lump of oxalic acid) may be coughed up daily along with mucus (phlegm).
Oral cavity: Gums and teeth become sensitive (tooth sensitivity), and tartar buildup on the tooth surface increases.

5. Neurological and psychiatric symptoms (brain and hormones)

When oxalic acid levels in the bloodstream increase, energy metabolism in the brain and nervous system is disrupted and inflammation occurs, causing mental and neurological symptoms to manifest as if they were acute poisoning.
Brain function decline: Brain fog, loss of concentration, memory problems, headaches and migraines.
Sleep and regulation disorders: Severe insomnia (sleep disorder), extreme fatigue, impaired physical coordination (clumsiness such as dropping objects or frequently bumping into things).
Mood swings: Depression without a clear reason, extreme anxiety, panic, irritability (anger), loss of motivation, mood changes.

6. Muscles, joints, and cardiovascular system

Joints and Connective Tissues: As oxalic acid hidden in bones, tendons, and joints is released, joint pain, inflammation, swelling, and pain in the neck and back occur. Acute pain similar to gout can even develop in joints that have never been painful in the past.
Cardiovascular and metabolic: Low blood pressure, heart palpitations (tachycardia), dizziness, and severe cellular acidosis may occur.

7. Reactivation of latent infection

During the clearing process, as the immune system focuses on processing oxalic acid crystals, other defense functions may be temporarily weakened, or hidden viruses may be released along with them. This can lead to a flare-up, in which latent infections such as herpes simplex (cold sores) or the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) are temporarily reactivated.

💡 Advice for those passing through the oxalic acid excretion system

These elimination symptoms exhibit a very capricious and cyclical pattern, appearing suddenly without warning and disappearing like a lie at some point . In fact, symptoms may worsen when your condition improves or kidney function recovers in order to expel even more toxins.
While it may be frightening or alarming, this is a 'healing process' your body undergoes to return to normal. However, when excretion symptoms are too severe for your body to handle, the safest and wisest approach is to 'slow down the release' by adding a small amount of oxalic acid (found in dark chocolate, black tea, etc.) to your diet . Additionally, you should adequately supplement with calcium, magnesium, natural salt (sea salt), and citric acid (lemon water) to soothe inflammation and prevent electrolyte loss.
